What are some synonyms for smoldering?

Doesn't matter if it refers to something literally burning, or mentally smoldering...Just try and give me as many as you can think of because I have to make a giant collage out of them! And give ones that actually make sense...so nothing like "boiling" because that was on a website, which I think is ridiculous. Thanks!
