Do chemical toilets at a building site poison the soil underneath them?

The toilet is gone, and I worked in topsoil and planted a magnolia. After 5 days, the leaves went black and it wilted. Could there be chemicals from the toilet? Or do these companies put a herbicide on the soil before placing a chemical toilet at a building site?
